IT'S BOOK REVIEW O'CLOCK
September 23, 2023
Words are very powerful, not just cos the Bible says so, even though that it in itself is the only authority needed – statutory or judicial. If you know what I mean.
A writer yields one of the greatest tools of all time. This goes without argument. However, if you insist on arguing then let’s dance.
If words were not powerful, mindset shift would not be a thing. Nothing anyone says would ever be able to influence your thoughts.
If words were not powerful, books would not make anyone cry. Emotions would never be communicated.
If words were not powerful, this article would not make you a better person after reading it. But, all of this happens (and will happen) because words have the power to translate humans into different realms, even the ones that are imaginable and delusional.
For too long I was a writer who did not read. I spent my entire secondary education confining my mind to classroom knowledge.
At some point, my school was plagued with the Romance Novel Virus. It was a bad case. Just like COVID-19, it was contagious. Unlike Covid, however, I didn't have to stay locked down to avoid an infection. I was already immune.
Contrary to what people believed, being an Art student made it worse. I was forced to read books that had been selected as curriculum texts for Literature-In-English. Whatever goosebumps I got from reading Amma Darko's Faceless instantly disappeared whenever I remembered I was going to be examined on it. All in all, Francine Rivers' Bridge to Haven was the closest I came to reading a hard-cover book outside my curriculum.
Simply put, I did not read enough.
Every time I said it aloud, people never believed me. I always got comments like:
“You’re this good and you don’t read other people’s work. WOW!”
“It’s a lie.”
“You don’t read books at all or you only read novels?”
Even with my pond of knowledge, my write-ups, especially my narrative essays, were a tour de force.
A National Competition win was a big stride for a young high schooler and that was exactly what my writing gifted me.
This made me realize that writing was a talent, a gift. Something I was blessed with, something that came to me naturally. It also made me wonder how good I would be if I read more. So I started reading non-academic books and I fell in love with words even more.
"Book Reviews" is a new category on our blog and our first pick is; "How Successful People Think".
Nothing that I have said so far can be found in John Maxwell’s book yet everything I have said is purposeful. I need yawl to understand the rationale behind this new category.
REASON ONE:
It’s simple, a person is as wise as his library.
I'll say that again.
A person is not as wise as their tangible library, a person is as wise as their mental faculties. Imagination, intuition, memory, reason, emotion, and perception are faculties in your mind. Words are the students in those faculties.
These students come from different parts and with different ambitions. The WORD OF GOD. The word from ministers. The word from movies, PDFs, and social media. The word from family, friends, and strangers. All these are examples of the students in your mind.
Different places, different presence. Some noticeable, loud, and traceable. Others hurtful, quiet and hidden.
This year, I made a resolution that as I dive deeper into God's word, I will ensure to milk out the wisdom He has freely given to amazing authors.
REASON TWO:
Accountability. This category exists so I can keep myself accountable while simultaneously steering you, my beautiful reader into the light of untapped wisdom. Transformation is an evergreen season in this space. So, whether it be a New York Times Best Seller, an e-book or a hard copy, paperback or hardcover, you and I are in this together. Even so, for the long haul.
Without further ado, Welcome to Aima’s Writing and to the first episode of “BOOK REVIEWS.”
Fun fact, "How Successful People Think" was my first read for the year. It was a very strategic pick and frankly, one that was long-overdue. I learnt so much from that short read and I can't wait to share them all.
But what do they say about that dog and the bone?
This article is more to introduce the book than to review it. Think of this as an Aimazon Book Club.
I'll see you in the next episode to dissect it. Be sure to go through it if you can. Come along with your thoughts, questions, and constructive criticism. Until then, this is Aima putting on the pen cap. Bye, guys.
